My career began as a Composite Structures Engineer, where I gained expertise in designing and analyzing advanced composite materials. I subsequently transitioned into research project management, spearheading innovative solutions for sustainable and zero-emission aircraft. My experience encompasses managing complex, multidisciplinary research projects, integrating diverse technologies at the aircraft level. I am adept at applying robust project management methodologies to ensure timely and successful project delivery. Driven by a passion for innovation, I have collaborated with international research teams and contributed to both industrial and academic publications.
What inspired you to pursue a career in this related field, e.g., aviation, carbon-free emissions etc?
As I delved deeper into the aviation field during years, I became increasingly aware of the urgent need to transition to sustainable aviation practices. The challenge of balancing technological advancement with environmental responsibility ignited my desire to contribute to the development of clean aviation technologies. Role in H2ELIOS
What is your role in the H2ELIOS project?
I am the coordinator of Piaggio Aerospace team within the project.
Can you describe your main responsibilities and tasks?
As the coordinator for WP1: “Specifications and Certification”, and WP5: “Demonstrator Integration & Testing”, I am responsible for ensuring the timely and efficient execution of these project phases. This involves closely monitoring work packages progress, identifying potential bottlenecks, and implementing corrective actions as needed in agreement with project coordinator. Additionally, I oversee the optimal allocation and utilization of resources for my company, including personnel, budget, and testing facility, to maximize efficiency and minimize risks. By maintaining a proactive approach to project management, I strive to deliver high-quality results within the established timelines and budget constraints.
How does your work contribute to the overall goals of the H2ELIOS project?
My role in the H2ELIOS project leverages my expertise in integrating innovative technologies at the aircraft level. I contribute to the maturation, certification, and testing of liquid hydrogen tanks for future green aircraft by ensuring seamless collaboration, efficient resource allocation, and adherence to rigorous technical standards. Specifically, my work in Work Packages 1 and 5 is instrumental in developing comprehensive specifications, certification requirements, and overseeing the integration and testing of the demonstrator.
We are actively shaping the future of air transport by integrating novel cryogenic technologies into aircraft.

The prospect of developing a hydrogen-powered aircraft, capable of significantly reducing carbon emissions, is both inspiring and challenging. I am eager to witness the tangible impact of our work on a global scale, as we strive to create a more environmentally friendly and sustainable future for aviation.
What has been the most challenging aspect of your work on this project?
One of the most significant challenges encountered in the H2ELIOS project has been navigating the complex landscape of aviation regulations and certification standards, particularly in the context of emerging technologies like liquid hydrogen tanks. Close collaboration with EASA during the project framework has been essential to identify potential gaps in existing certification rules, such as those outlined in Part 21 of the CS25 regulation, and to develop innovative solutions for integrating disruptive technologies into aircraft systems. This ongoing dialogue with EASA ensures that the H2ELIOS project remains focused on developing technologies with a clear path towards certification for hydrogen-powered aircraft.
Can you share a significant milestone or achievement your team has reached so far?
A significant milestone for the Piaggio Aerospace team has been the successful completion of the airworthiness regulation gap analysis in close cooperation with certification authority, which has facilitated the design phase for the liquid hydrogen tank demonstrator. This analysis has enabled us to propose a potential certification roadmap for the integration of liquid hydrogen fuel tanks into future zero-emission aircraft.

What have you learned during your time working on H2ELIOS?
Working on the H2ELIOS project has been a valuable learning experience, particularly in the domain of cryogenic technologies and their application in aviation. I have gained a better understanding of the challenges and opportunities associated with storing and handling liquid hydrogen, as well as its impact on aircraft design and operation. Additionally, the project has highlighted the critical role of liquid hydrogen fuel tank in shaping the configuration of future zero-emission aircraft.
